The greater Westhampton area, comprised of several villages and hamlets including Westhampton, Westhampton Beach, Quogue, East Quogue, and Speonk, is one of the most exclusive real estate locations on the Eastern seaboard. Considered to be the "gateway to the Hamptons" because of its relative westerly location and closer proximity to New York City, the Westhampton area has experienced significant growth both in population and in real estate values in the last decade.
Although Quogue, the area’s oldest village, was founded in 1640, Westhampton, New York real estate area did not become popular with New Yorkers until the 1870s, after the Long Island Railroad began its operations. With trains bringing car after car of visitors to Long Island’s shores, enterprising Westhamptoners began renting spare rooms and guest cottages to the vacationers, and within a relatively short period of time, the area’s leading industries had transitioned from the traditional whaling, fishing and farming, to services centered on tourism. The area’s first beach hotel -- Howell House -- was completed in 1868 with funding from P.T. Barnum, and the hotel continues to pamper guests even today.
