A Bit of History

As part of the Quogue Purchase, the area of Westhampton Beach was first settled in 1666. It was a sleepy beach community that experienced its first real estate boom in 1675. However, homes for sale and development in the small area did not truly explode until nearly a century and a half later, around 1870. At this time, residents of Westhampton Beach (then known as Ketchaboneck) began providing lodging for travelers who came to the area. These travelers arrived via the newly built Long Island Railroad spur from Manorville. As more and more visitors arrived, new industries cropped up to accommodate the growing numbers. Today, tourism is the most significant aspect of the regional economy, and homes for sale in Westhampton are in exceptionally high demand. Initially, whaling, fishing, and farming were the primary sources of income for Westhampton Beach residents.

The Westhampton Historical Society Museum is located on Mill Road. This circa 1800 house features varying exhibits, including photographs of early Westhampton Beach.
